Program Overview

A midwife is a trained healthcare professional who specializes in supporting women through pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum care, and reproductive health. Midwives are experts in natural birth practices, maternal health, and neonatal care, offering a personalized and holistic approach to women’s healthcare.

There are several types of certified midwives, each with unique qualifications and scopes of practice:

At Bruanwald College of Medical Science, the midwifery curriculum emphasizes holistic, evidence-based care and includes extensive hands-on training in hospitals, clinics, and community settings. Graduates are equipped to support women through every stage of the birthing journey and to work in both urban and rural healthcare environments.

Types of Midwives

  • Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs):
Registered Nurses (RNs) with advanced graduate-level training in midwifery. CNMs are licensed to practice in hospitals, clinics, and birth centers.

  • Certified Midwives (CMs):
Professionals with a health-related bachelor’s degree who complete midwifery education and certification, though they are not RNs.

  • Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs):
Non-nurse midwives trained specifically for out-of-hospital births, such as home births and birth centers. Their training emphasizes hands-on experience in community-based settings.
